Nissan Signs With Kelly Racing for 2013
Know about this one since pre Bathurst sorry couldn't pass it on would have got my brother in trouble. He has been working on the cars developing engine parts that the engine builder needs to get the most out of the new power planet since pre bathurst. He now has 6 chassis required for next year (massive job when you consider he is the only JD Fabricatior compared to the 5 or 6 teams like FPR have) I'm looking forward to seeing them back.
NISSAN is set to be a shock inclusion on the V8 Supercars grid next year, with the powerhouse Japanese manufacturer to announce today it will be taking the fight to Holden and Ford.
V8 Supercars officials claim the addition of Nissan will "bulletproof" the future of the sport.
Nissan has agreed to rejoin the series in 2013 with the Kelly Racing Team in a move that will inject hundreds of thousands of dollars into the sport and place a wedge between the iconic battle between Holden and Ford.
The two manufacturers are said to be unhappy about the addition of Nissan, with Holden also reeling from the sudden departure of the Kelly Racing team, which will be confirmed this morning.
The bombshell entry will also give several lowly placed teams the ammunition to take on the likes of Holden-backed Team Vodafone.
Nissan will spend up big in a bid to upset its rivals.
made possible by the "Car of the Future" program, headed by Holden legend Mark Skaife, and has been three years in the making.
The Daily Telegraph also understands that the announcement, to be made by V8 Supercars and Nissan today at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, will be the first of many.
Several other manufacturers, including Chrysler, have been in talks with the fast-growing series and are also expected to join the Australian series.
Nissan's inclusion is likely to help address the uneven split which this year saw 17 Commodores take on 11 Falcons.
Holden-backed driver Jamie Whincup won the series.
Nissan was last in the series in 1992, with the manufacturer then supporting Skaife, the man who helped bring the company back after a 20-year absence.
The famed "Godzilla" Skyline won the Bathurst 1000 in 1991 and 1992, with winners Skaife and Jim Richards booed by an angry crowd in 1992.

From what I can gather Nissan is going to release a BRAND NEW V8 sedan for the road at the end of the year, and this will be there platform for the V8's
My opinion: Early 90's Nissan as driven out of the sport with new rules implemented on turbo's and 4wd,etc, I can see them spending big bucks to regain the dominance they had!!!!

Skaifey confirmed today on AM radio its 8 cylinders. The car will be revealed later in the year apparently.
They are looking at more international races on the back of it also.

Its ironic that it was the dominant car they built, the GTR, that got the V8 rules introduced and Nissan (and BMW) kicked out of the game, and Nissan are the first to return now the rules have been opened up.
I'm not really a fan of the whole CotF concept, but its great to see Nissan back in Australian motorsport & i wish them all the success they can achieve Kelly Racing are a great choice to team up with.

im on team Nissan already. Might watch more races when they come in. I get tired of the Ford v Holden deal, so i dont watch many of the races.
Bring back the Multi make series. Get some Chryslers, Toyotas, BMWs in there.
Would be sweet.

I agree, i'm a Ford man at heart but it never sat right with me that at the end of 1992 they would kick BMW and Nissan out of the series (both of whom had pumped money into the series for over a decade) for the sake of Holden and Ford winning more.... i always thought a normally aspirated adaption of Group A was the way to go for 1993...
Ford vs Holden is the core of Australian touring car racing, has been since 1968 when they first met on equal footing, but that shouldn't have ever excluded other makes from racing, so its great to see Nissan, and if the rumours are true, Chrysler, both returning to the series

Re: Nissan Signs With Kelly Racing for 2013
Ahhhhhhh the days when the the drivers could swap cars at bathurst .The first year Jim and Skaifey won at Bathurst Skaife was meant to finish in there car but crompton and Olofson I think it was where having a bad day so skaifey was ordered to finish the 2nd car He Managed to bring it all the way back to 3rd only to retire with mechanical problems.. That is the only time i can recall the gtr ever having trouble....
Or the "Pack of assholes year" what a shocker heres me 12years old standing on the fence at the chase in poring down rain by MYSELF lol. I wasnt gonna miss a crash at the fastest part of the track... Jim was lucky the booing was so loud coz if they had of heard him i'd reckon there would have been riot's.

Your right, it was 1991 and Skaife stepped into the Drew Price/Garry Waldon #2 car (Crompton/Oloffson raced #2 in 1992). He set the fastest lap of the race in it as well before as you say it retired.
As dominant as the GTR was, it was beaten in 1990 and 1991 at the Wellington 500 by the Schnitzer BMW M3s.

Very true Wally, Longhurst was the only person to beat the Richards & Skaife steamroller of 1991, winning at Amaroo and at Lakeside as shown above.
Was abit more competitive in 1992, with Skaife, Bowe, Seton, Longhurst & Brock all winning races...

Re: Nissan Signs With Kelly Racing for 2013
Good to have them back certainly a major playing in touring car racing in this country for a long period of time. It is interesting that they had a major part in creating the formula we now. I believe as a 4 year old I first supported Jim Richards and Mark Skaife at some point during 92. I became a Holden man because of their move across in 93. I don't yet have the full 91 season but from what I've seen it isn't the most exciting. I'm interested to see whether it was as bad as 88.

Re: Nissan Signs With Kelly Racing for 2013
I remember being told that Skaife was the major proponent of the black wheels getting put on the cars to start with. Not sure who ordered the mid-season change to white.
The results were one-sided but there was alot of good races in the '91 season. Amaroo is the standout, but others like Johnson dominating the early stages of Wanneroo with Percy etc.. weren't too bad.
The 'recession Australia had to have' in 1991 (according to Paul Keating) too alot of the sting out of the 1991 season, along with CAMS ordering entrants to pay ludicrus 'registration fees' for the championship (the same price whether you were entering 1 round or all 9) meant alot of the privateers pulled out of the series... the better financial climate along with the dropping of the stupid 'registration fee' for 1992 meant the grids went back up again.
